What’s the Difference Between FUT and FUE Hair Transplants?

Men who are looking at a surgical hair transplant have a couple options available to them. Two of the more common options are follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT) procedures. Below are a few of the key differences between the two:

FUE Hair Transplants

A FUE transplant involves taking the patient’s remaining hair and transplanting it to the scalp. The process is repeated until the surgeon determines that enough hair has been removed. The full process can take several days to complete.

Unfortunately, FUE has many downsides. For starters, the surgery can leave behind scars—while typically small dots, they will still be visible. It should also be noted that the FUE procedure transplants hair from all over the head and the results may not be permanent. It is also a costly procedure.

FUT vs FUE Hair Transplants

The graft quality of FUE is inferior compared to FUT and the donor locations may be left visibly bald. Perhaps the biggest disadvantage is that the hair is out of the body for a longer period, which increases the risk of sub-optimal growth. And since it’s taken from spots where the hair may be starting to thin, the patient may end up losing the hair anyway. However, FUE involves less recovery time and discomfort.

FUT Hair Transplants

With an FUT hair transplant, a surgeon will transplant hair from one part of the scalp to another. Some people are cautious about undergoing the procedure since it involves cutting away a strip of tissue, then grafting it to various spots on the scalp. The doctor must also create holes on the scalp for the transplanted hair.

This method is not recommended for patients who like to keep their hair short due to the scarring. The biggest advantage is that the hair is extracted from a healthy area of the scalp, which means that the recipient will likely avoid any future complications.

When it comes to choosing between the two, FUT hair transplants provide superior results. And while FUE procedures are only successful 80% of the time, FUT transplants have a 100% success rate.

In business since August 1, 1986, I am the president and also a client at The Canadian Institute of Hair & Scalp Specialists. Having worked with a team of Doctors and Chemists over the years I have compiled a great deal of knowledge in this area, originally involved with a Pharmaceutical company manufacturing vitamins for the hair loss industry. Years ago I was fascinated by the new developments in this area as my own hair was beginning to thin. Studying Trichology at the Toronto clinic I then opened my own office and have enjoyed it ever since.
