What to Expect when Getting Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair Transplant Surgery

There are many people looking for hair transplants in Toronto, but there are also several who do not know if it is the right step for them. For some, the idea of going for a hair transplant surgery can seem intimidating because they do not know what to expect. Fortunately, hair transplants are not only one of the most effective hair loss procedures, but they are also very simple procedures to have done: A hair transplant session takes only a day, and patients can return to their normal life soon after the procedure. Hair transplants are the only treatments which can provide a permanent, full head of hair.

Why Do Some Men Go Bald Earlier?

Here are the steps for having hair transplantation done in Toronto or any city.

Hair Transplant Procedure Step By Step

1. Consultation with Hair Loss Doctor / Trichologist

If you are considering a hair transplant surgery, the first step is to meet with your hair loss doctor. While hair transplants are the most effective hair loss treatment option available, they are not for everybody. Your hair doctor / trichologist will confirm whether it would be a good option for you depending on your age, hair loss pattern, and level of hair loss. One hair transplant session only takes a day, although it’s possible that you may need a couple of sessions. Your doctor will inform you of what you can expect and show you the results of previous hair transplant surgeries.

2. Before the Hair Transplant Procedure

On the day of your hair transplant surgery, photos will be taken of your hair and marks will be made on your scalp to indicate which areas will be treated. First, your scalp will be thoroughly cleaned. Then, your hair restoration physician will administer a local anaesthetic to numb the donor area, which is the area on the back of your head where a small strip of scalp will be removed. This strip contains the hair follicles which will be transplanted onto your bald spot(s).

Your hair loss physician will then suture the donor area, and by securing your hair, they can ensure that this area is covered and hidden from view afterwards. With the local anaesthetic, you should not feel any pain during the hair surgery procedure.

3. Preparation of the Hair Follicles

The next step is when your hair treatment physician and his or her team begin dividing the strip into individual hair follicles (or small clusters of follicles), which can be grafted to the balding spot(s) of your head. During this stage, you have a break to do whatever you’d like, such as reading, walking around, or taking a quick nap.

4. Hair Transplant Procedure

Once the hair grafts are ready, the hair transplant procedure can begin. Your hair physician will once again clean and administer an anaesthetic to your scalp so that you cannot feel a thing. Your physician will make tiny slits or incisions in your scalp, where the hair grafts can be inserted. At this stage, your physician is paying specific attention to the placement of your hair, ensuring that it is grafted in a way that looks completely natural.

5. Post Hair Transplant Treatment

When each of the hair grafts has been transplanted to your head, the hair transplantation treatment is done. You will be able to return to a normal routine almost immediately, although it is common for there to be some tenderness or pain on your scalp. For this reason, your physician may prescribe painkillers. He or she may also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. You can expect to return to work the day after hair surgery in many cases, although some people take a bit more time off.

Your hair loss physician / doctor will also give you some post-care instructions for washing and taking care of your hair. By following these, you will ensure that you soon have a full head of natural-looking hair that lasts for the rest of your life. Read more about post hair transplant surgery tips.

In business since August 1, 1986, I am the president and also a client at The Canadian Institute of Hair & Scalp Specialists. Having worked with a team of Doctors and Chemists over the years I have compiled a great deal of knowledge in this area, originally involved with a Pharmaceutical company manufacturing vitamins for the hair loss industry. Years ago I was fascinated by the new developments in this area as my own hair was beginning to thin. Studying Trichology at the Toronto clinic I then opened my own office and have enjoyed it ever since.
