The Problem of Hair Thinning and Solutions

Bald Spot

Bald Spot

As we age, hair loss is expected. However, some may lose more hair than others, many even experiencing hair loss at an early age. The most common cause of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia, better known as male pattern baldness, but other causes exist. Below are some of those causes, all of which may make you want to consider thinning hair treatment.

An excess of the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the cause of 95% of male pattern baldness. It causes hair loss by killing hair follicles, preventing them from receiving essential nutrients.

A hair loss treatment for DHT can range from over-the-counter ointments to prescription medication.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is a hereditary condition that can be caused by stress or viral infections. This is the result of an immune disorder and causes hair to fall out in patches. The frequency can vary between being a one-time occurrence to happening frequently. If you notice signs of alopecia areata, it is recommended that you call your doctor immediately.

Hair Loss in Women

Women can also suffer from hair loss and require treatment as frequently as men. Some of the causes in women include hormonal imbalances and tumors that affect the ovaries and adrenal glands. That’s why it is important for women suffering from hair loss to seek medical treatment immediately, in order to rule out the possibility that the cause is a serious medical condition.

A lower level of estrogen is another cause of hair loss in women; it may also be a side effect of use of birth control pills.

Solutions for Receding Hair in Men and Women

There are a number of thinning hair treatment options available to both men and women. For instance, medications such as Minoxidil and steroid injections are two options available to patients who would prefer to treat their hair loss with non-surgical methods. Transplants are also an option and one of the best hairline restoration methods available. With a transplant, hair is taken from another part of the scalp and placed on the afflicted area.

If a patient is uncomfortable with going under the knife, hair systems are available. Using a combination of natural and synthetic hair, a hair system is virtually indistinguishable from your natural hair. This method can cost slightly more than a hair transplant, but if you are looking for a hair loss treatment that is non-invasive and doesn’t involve drugs, this is a viable option.

In business since August 1, 1986, I am the president and also a client at The Canadian Institute of Hair & Scalp Specialists. Having worked with a team of Doctors and Chemists over the years I have compiled a great deal of knowledge in this area, originally involved with a Pharmaceutical company manufacturing vitamins for the hair loss industry. Years ago I was fascinated by the new developments in this area as my own hair was beginning to thin. Studying Trichology at the Toronto clinic I then opened my own office and have enjoyed it ever since.
