Premature Hair Loss: Causes and Treatment

Hair Loss

Hair LossYou may not have expected to need hair loss treatment while you were still in your twenties, or even your teens, but young people can experience balding, too. Hair loss may be thought of as a problem that mostly affects older people, but premature hair loss is more common than many people think. In fact, a large percentage of men suffer from premature balding, and young women can experience hair loss.

What Is Premature Hair Loss?

Premature hair loss is a general term used to refer to any hair loss that occurs earlier than normal. For many men and women, the first signs of hair loss will not occur until they are in their thirties, forties, or fifties. However, with premature hair loss, some people will begin to go bald in their twenties, or even while in their teenage years.

Premature hair loss usually refers to androgenic alopecia, which is a genetic type of hair loss. In men, this is usually seen as a receding hairline and balding crown, while women see a diffuse thinning throughout their scalp. Androgenic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss, but there are other types that can also occur.

Premature Balding Causes

There are many possible premature hair loss causes.

  • Genetics: Some people are just predisposed to suffer from hair loss due to their genetics. With this type of hair loss, there is no external cause, although certain factors may be able to speed up your rate of hair loss.
  • Puberty: Hormones have a big impact on our hair, and when we experience puberty, that can be the trigger for genetic forms of hair loss. For these people, it’s possible to begin losing their hair even while they’re still in their mid-teens.
  • Smoking: Smoking is another possible trigger for premature balding. Research has found a link between smoking cigarettes and early hair loss. Smoking constricts our blood vessels and causes decreased blood flow to the scalp, leading to balding.
  • Drug Use: Certain medications and drugs have hair loss as a possible side effect, and these can play a role in early hair loss. As well, it’s believed that illicit drugs may trigger early hair loss, possibly by causing an increase in adrenaline levels.
  • Alopecia Areata: If you have patchy hair loss, then you may have alopecia areata. This type of hair loss is thought to be caused by an autoimmune reaction in your body, where your immune system attacks hair follicles.
  • Aggressive Hair Treatments: Treating your hair harshly can end up causing permanent damage to your hair follicles. Everything from frequent dyeing, hot ironing, blow drying, and even tight ponytails or braids can lead to damage, which can cause hair loss at any age.
  • Thyroid or Hormonal Disturbances: There are a number of health conditions and disorders that can affect our hormone levels, which can lead to premature balding. Thyroid disorders involve increases or decreases in our hormones, which can result in thinning of the hair.

In business since August 1, 1986, I am the president and also a client at The Canadian Institute of Hair & Scalp Specialists. Having worked with a team of Doctors and Chemists over the years I have compiled a great deal of knowledge in this area, originally involved with a Pharmaceutical company manufacturing vitamins for the hair loss industry. Years ago I was fascinated by the new developments in this area as my own hair was beginning to thin. Studying Trichology at the Toronto clinic I then opened my own office and have enjoyed it ever since.
